  • Account Information: When you sign up (via email or Google Login), we collect your name, email address, and profile photo.
  • User Type & Mentorship Information: We collect your user type (high school student, college student, job seeker, or job holder) and any mentor relationships you set up, such as a parent, coach, or counselor connected to your account.
  • Profile & Academic Data: To provide accurate career and college matches, we collect your self-reported academic statistics (e.g., GPA, test scores), career interests, personality test responses, and preferences.
  • Work & Education History: If you add it to your profile, we collect your work experience and education history to improve career and program recommendations.
  • Resume Information: If you upload or paste your resume, we collect that content and use AI to extract details such as your work history, education, and skills to improve your career and job recommendations.
  • AI Interactions & Saved Items: We collect the text of the questions you ask our AI Career Coach, your conversation history, the feedback you provide on its answers, and any colleges, programs, or careers you save to your profile.

1.2 Information Automatically Collected

  • Log Data: Includes your IP address, browser type, operating system, and timestamp of access.
  • Cookies: We use strictly necessary cookies to keep you logged in and functional cookies to remember your preferences.
  • Location Data: We do not track your precise real-time location. We only process location data that you manually enter (such as your preferred state or zip code) to filter colleges and careers relevant to you.

2. PUBLIC DATA SOURCES WE USE

To power our recommendations, we use publicly available government data, including the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard and the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS). This data describes schools, programs, and occupations in general and is not linked to your personal information.

3. HOW WE USE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Light My Career is an AI-powered platform. This section explains how your data interacts with our AI models.

  • Data Injection: To give you personalized advice, we programmatically send your Profile Data (such as your interests, grade level, and academic stats) and your specific Questions to third-party AI providers.
  • Our AI Partners: We currently use OpenAI (GPT-4.1 and GPT-5 family models), DeepSeek, and Perplexity to generate responses.
  • Program & College Summaries: We use Perplexity to generate factual summaries of academic programs and colleges based on official school websites. This process does not use your personal profile data.
  • Resume Parsing: If you upload or paste a resume, we use AI to extract structured details (such as work history, education, and skills) to personalize your recommendations.
  • Estimates, Not Guarantees: Match scores, admissions estimates, and career recommendations generated by our AI are informational estimates based on available data. They are not guarantees of admission, employment, or income outcomes.
  • No Training on Your Data: We utilize the API versions of these services, which are subject to strict enterprise privacy policies. Our configuration ensures that your personal data is not used to train the public models of OpenAI, DeepSeek, or Perplexity.
  • Disclaimer: While we take precautions to anonymize direct identifiers where possible, you should avoid entering highly sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (such as Social Security Numbers or health data) directly into the AI chat interface.

4. HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION

We use your data to:

  • Provide Core Services: Calculate college admissions chances and generate career match scores.
  • Personalize AI Responses: Inject your profile context into the AI Coach so it gives relevant advice.
  • Parse Resume Data: Automatically extract structured career information, such as work history, education, and skills, from resumes you upload or paste.
  • Generate Program & College Information: Create informational summaries of majors and schools using publicly available school websites.
  • Manage Your Account: Authenticate your login and save your "Favorite" schools, programs, and careers.
  • Communication: Send you product updates and newsletters via EmailOctopus (only if you have opted in).

5. HOW WE SHARE YOUR INFORMATION

We do not sell your personal data. However, we share data with specific third-party service providers to function:

  • OpenAI, DeepSeek & Perplexity: We send user queries, profile stats, and resume content to generate career advice, resume analysis, and program/college summaries.
  • Google: We use Google for login authentication and Google Maps APIs.
  • Algolia: We use Algolia to power search across schools, programs, and careers on our site.
  • EmailOctopus: We use this service to manage our newsletters and waitlists.
  • Bubble.io: Our application is hosted on Bubble, which stores our encrypted database.

We may also disclose information if required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena or similar legal process.

6. GOOGLE SERVICES INTEGRATION

  • Google Sign-In: If you choose to register or log in using your Google account, you authorize us to access your Google profile information (name, email, profile picture) consistent with your Google privacy settings.
  • Google Maps: We use the Google Maps API to display college locations. Your use of these maps is subject to the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy.

7. YOUR RIGHTS & CHOICES

  • Access & Correction: You can view and edit your profile directly in your account settings.
  • Deletion: You may request the deletion of your account and all associated data by contacting us at info@lightmycareer.com.
  • Marketing Opt-Out: You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time by clicking the "Unsubscribe" link in the footer of any email sent via EmailOctopus.

8. CHILDREN'S PRIVACY

Our services are not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will delete it immediately.

9. INTERNATIONAL USERS

Light My Career is operated in the United States. If you are accessing the site from outside the US, you acknowledge and agree that your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States.
